Data literacy

A ZIP code is a starting point. Geography makes it useful.

Why postal ZIPs and Census statistical areas need careful handling.

Two different kinds of geography

Postal ZIP codes organize mail delivery. Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, or ZCTAs, are statistical areas used to publish community estimates. They serve different purposes. Matching digits alone are not a sufficient rule for joining datasets.

Use an explicit relationship

The Texas explorer uses a governed ZIP–ZCTA bridge to identify eligible direct matches. Postal ZIPs without an eligible match stay searchable, with local Census estimates clearly shown as unavailable.

Keep the geographic label with the number

A postal locality name is a lookup label. It is not the same as a municipal boundary, a county boundary, or a metropolitan area. Each published estimate should retain the geography it actually describes.

Make uncertainty visible

The explorer uses 2020–2024 ACS five-year estimates, rather than presenting them as current counts. Published 90% margins of error appear where the supplied source includes them.
